There is no point in sanding or bleaching. Those nasty stains permeate the wood throughout, so sanding is an exercise in futility. Bleach will work, but it will also obliterate the natural woodgrain. So don't just spin your wheels... go somewhere.

After scraping, clean-up, and stripping-out of the old caulking, the sill was sanded smooth and given two solid coats of a tinted stain-blocking acrylic primer.

Tinted primer plus some faux bois woodgraining turns a horror show into horoshow...

The painted faux finish easily restored the appearance of these sills. The window jambs are the original, and display the typical woodgraining of fir, which differs from the straight-grain of cedar.

Once the two side sills were done, the white sill of the middle window looked odd -- especially the narrow white strips verging off to the sides.

Artistic license was used here. Faux woodgraining made this vinyl window sill blend with its neighbours.

A restoration like this takes only a few hours, and is a quick way to make polyester pants out of a cow's ear.
