REJUVENATING VERTICAL BLINDS:

Many more things can be reused and saved if we make an effort.

There's the woman who once got my goat. See how and why on this page.

At the end of this re-paint, the one obvious deficiency was the appearance of these existing vertical blinds. There was little wrong with them: they worked well, and were fully functional, but the colour of them was now sadly dated. Rather than replace these and other verticals in this suite, I was asked to paint them.

Look how easy it was.

vertical blinds

Of the several dozen white slats of each blind, only a half-dozen or so were accented with coloured fabric, so painting was limited to these few.

Slipped from their holders, they were laid out on a tarped floor, primed with stain-blocking acrylic, and top-coated with a harmonizing colour. The longest strip was a sixteen foot valance, which made work space in this room a bit tight.

Compare this colour to the original in the first photo.

After the fabric has been removed, you may see that a few of the plastic slats are discoloured (typically from exposure to strong heat and sunlight).

spray

... so grab a spray can of a suitable colour (I used flat white alkyd here) and spray those edges. Arrange the slats closely in a cascade fashion, and spray the visible edges of one side. Two thin coats are better than one heavy one.

Let dry and then...

spray opposite side

similarly, do the other side.

new look

Old verticals now have a nice new look, plus the customer has the satisfaction of having saved by recycling. Everyone wins except the window shade guy .
