This steel-clad door was given the look of wood.
Better quality exterior doors have stamped and raised panels. When simulating a woodgrain on these, each plane should be treated as a separate board.
Doing this requires extensive masking to protect adjacent surfaces. This can be painstaking work with masking tape. Instead, try using freezer-wrap paper and a contact spray adhesive. Freezer-wrap is waxed and somewhat water-resistant, so it won't get destroyed by watery glazes. The low-tack of spray adhesive is not apt to lift and thereby damage the previous work, as can happen with masking tape.
Contact adhesive also will allow for removal and repositioning of the paper several or more times.
Use a light spray application. If applied too heavily, this product will leave a gluey residue.
